Your roof is there to protect your family and belongings. When it’s not in great condition it can’t do its job. Although you may be thinking that it’s a good idea to just wait and see if you can get insurance to cover your new roof, this isn’t a great idea. Here’s why.
Although we get strong storms in Tampa from time to time, more often than not, the damage homeowners see during and after a hurricane is from a roof leak. Unless you can prove the damage occurred during the storm, it’s not going to be covered. If you already have a roof leak and we get heavy soaking rain for days, the water damage can get extensive. That means more damage to your home and belongings, none of which may be covered.
Today’s roofs are significantly stronger than those installed 10 or 15 years ago. Many of the quality roofing materials like concrete tiles, metal roofing and architectural style designer shingles better protect your home from wind. When the roofing material you have on your home stands up to wind better, your home is less likely to have a roof leak or other issue.
If you wait until after hurricane season and your roof didn’t sustain damage but you still need a roof replacement, you may find that you have to wait. Often supplies run low and roofing companies are short on manpower because there are so many people needing roof repair and replacement.
If you gamble and wait and you escape storm damage and have to pay for the new roof yourself, you may find you end up paying more than your neighbor did who decided to replace their roof now. There are many reasons roofing costs go up after a storm. Sometimes it’s because the price of supplies (with oil being the main ingredient in an asphalt shingle) and labor go up. Sometimes it’s the law of supply and demand and suppliers charge more because they know they will still get the sale. Other times, it’s just that the manufacturers raised their prices because the cost of doing business went up due to tariffs and fees.
Now is a good time to have your roof inspected for structural stability. You don’t want to be one of the homeowners whose roofs blows off or sees significant water damage during a storm.
